Back to School Barbecue

On Saturday, September 22, 2012 the smell of barbecue permeated the ACS neighborhood.  Beginning at 4 p.m. ACS families and friends came to the school auditorium for a chance to have some good food, catch up with old friends, and make new friends with some of our many new families. This barbecue marked the beginning of a very special year for ACS. We are beginning our countdown to mark the 50th anniversary of bringing Catholic education to the community of Perth Amboy and the surrounding area. On October 12, 2013 a very special celebration will take place to mark this occasion. Mark your calendar so you may join in this day.

ACS faculty and administration members worked all day to make sure that everyone would have a good time. Guests were treated to choices of hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, and barbecued pork. Along with these choices they also had choices of homemade salads like potato salad, pasta salad, corn salad, and some other tasty items. After finishing their meal, and if there was still enough room, the guests moved on to the dessert table where they found many selections from homemade pumpkin cake to the forever favorite Jello with whipped cream.

The faculty and administration would like to thank all of the Assumption Catholic parish families as well as the ACS families for your support. We would also like to thank those that came out to help the teachers prepare for the barbecue: Mrs. Androshchuk, mom to Andrew and Tanya, and Mrs. Machette, mom to Jack in Pre K, and Mrs. Carol Fiore, mom to Miss Fiore, were there all day to cook, set up, and serve; and Mr. Pete Baralecki, dad to Andrew and Mr. Marty Pickering for their grill master skills. Thank you also to Ms. Anna Lawrence for supplying us with a great selection of music.  The proceeds from this event will go to bring educational programs to our children or to offset the cost of student field trips.

Jam World Record Project

ACS participated  in the Jam World Record.  Schools all over the country were dancing  to dance to the Cotton Eye Joe on September 27, to break the world’s record .  The Jam world record was begun to have schools focus on physical fitness.  Michele Obama began Jam School as an incentive to get kids moving while in school.  Schools took one minute out of their day to move an a healthy manner to promote fitness.

Back to School Glyph Project by Mrs. Bernstein’s Terrific Third Grade

The Terrific Third started backed to school with an art project that was anything but ordinary! A glyph is defined as a symbolic figure or picture. Students were tasked to create individual glyphs using symbols that represented answers to a set of questions. The questions included: How many children are in your family? What is your favorite subject? What is your favorite free time activity? How many pets do you have? Once the glyphs were completed each one was framed. Next the students will use the data on the glyphs to create tally and bar charts. Finally, the students will become detectives as they try to discover the glyph’s true identity! The glyphs are on display in the third grade classroom!

Welcome Back To School

If you were standing anywhere near Assumption Catholic School on the morning of Wednesday, September 05, 2012 you would have felt the excitement in the air. The question is, was it the excitement of the students or the parents? Most likely it was a combination of both, students and parents! There’s nothing like the first day of school.

Students used the time on the playground to catch up with old friends after a long summer of relaxation. New students were welcomed by their new classmates, becoming a part of the ACS family. Teachers were just as excited as the students and welcomed their new class with enthusiasm.

With the sounding of the first bell students entered the building led by their teachers. The playground quickly emptied of students and before you knew it, parents were left standing with a list of different emotions. Some were sending their first off to school, others were sending their youngest, evoking a feeling of either happiness or just a little sadness. Some parents might have shed tears. Were they tears of sadness or tears of joy? Many parents were probably left wondering what they were going to do with their child/children in school all day.

A new year has started!

Welcome Back Message

Welcome back to another exciting year at Assumption Catholic School. There have been some changes that I would like to make everyone aware of.

We bid a fond farewell to Mrs. Shumny (grade 1) and Sister Maria (grade 2). We thank them for their years of service here at ACS and ask God for His blessings on them in their new endeavors. We welcome Mrs. Giordano, our new first grade teacher, and Mrs. Khouzam, our new second grade teacher. Both are eagerly anticipating working with our ACS students.

We are instituting a pilot Accelerated Math program for qualified students in grades six, seven and eight. The accelerated Math program will be taught by Ms. Hanna who is diligently working to create an even more challenging Math curriculum.

We also bid farewell to Coach S. (Mr. Stankovitz – Phys Ed) and Ms. Hanania (Art), both of whom will be missed by the ACS community. Our new Phys Ed teacher will be Mrs. Kowalski, while the new art teacher will be announced shortly.

We are also pleased to announce that the Metuchen Diocese schools are now affiliated with a new accrediting agency called AdvanceEd. We are now fully accredited by AdvanceEd and will be working toward our reaccreditation this year with the new agency. This year will be an exciting year as we prepare for our 50th anniversary.

This year, for the 49th time, eager and nervous children will enter our doors to attain “a firm foundation in the truths of the Catholic faith, an appreciation for the traditions of the Ukrainian Rite, and the moral and academic training essential to grow daily in wisdom, virtue and understanding.”

Congratulations

Congratulations to Peter Zulin and Anthony Ciko, students of Assumption Catholic School, who were named Top Academic Students of our parish school by Perth Amboy Merchants Association, Inc., in a program held on June 12. Congratulations to our students for their exception achievement in 2012.

From Toothpicks to Newspapers

Mrs. Lawrence’s fifth grade class learned all about structures this year.  They used the world wide web to view different types of bridges and buildings as well as to understand the engineering aspects of each type of structure.  In October they designed and “built” their own building using toothpicks and Playdoh.

The culminating assignment was to build a geodesic dome out of newspapers, cardboard tubes, and masking tape.  Eight groups tried their best to construct a dome about six feet in diameter on the school playground.  Despite the uncooperative weather most groups nearly completed their domes.  Considering this was a first time experience for all, including Mrs. Lawrence, the results were good.

Congratulations Kindergarten Graduates!

Assumption Catholic School celebrated the graduation of 19 kindergarteners with a ceremony held on Monday evening, June 11, 2012.
The ceremony included a concert with the awarding of graduation certificates. The boys and girls looked so nice in their caps and gowns. Congratulations to our kindergarteners.
