Celebrating First Solemn Holy Eucharist (Communion)

This is indeed a happy occasion for our parish community, school and for the children’s families. Even in the midst of the pandemic,  our parish Catechists  and Assumption Catholic School religion instructors were  able to have in-person instruction for our communicants. That is quite a tribute to them, students and parents! One more example of what can be accomplished when everyone works together! Thank you for helping to prepare our children for the greatest gift they will ever receive. We can only hope and pray that their parents will provide the opportunities for their children to continue to receive the Holy Eucharist at weekly  Liturgy (Mass).

New Members inducted into the National Junior Honor Society

On a beautiful morning after Divine Liturgy, three new members were inducted into the ACS Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. These members were left out last year due to the pandemic, so this year Mrs. Shumny made sure they would have their moment to shine.

Giovanna Barrientos Roman, Yean Paul Magyar, and Derek Vazquez were welcomed to the special group by Dylan Acevedo and Jeremy Valdez, the only remaining members from pre pandemic – 2019. Dylan and Jeremy reviewed the qualities that are considered when applying for membership. They are Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship. Parents of the inductees and students from grade 5 through 8 were also in attendance. Best of luck to all members of the NJHS. May God continue to bless them as they get ready to start the next chapter of their lives.

First Penance ( Reconciliation)

“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned …” Today, our  children  were blessed to have their first Confessions heard and this Sunday they will be welcomed around the Eucharistic table for the first time. The girls will be dressed in white dresses and the boys in their Sunday best with their hair combed and shirts tucked in. The purity and innocence of the children will be on full display. Congratulation children and their parents. The day will truly be full of faith, hope and love.

Diversity Day at ACS

We celebrated the uniqueness of our students by honoring their cultural diversity.

Planned and organized by Ms. Drayton and Mrs. Garcia, classes explored the question of “What is it to be me?” This led to a better understanding of individual ethnicity and pride in what makes us who we are. Using that theme, students created videos using the Flipgrid program.
The day’s highlights included the premier of the students’ “flipgrid” videos followed by a delicious international lunch. Thanks to the ACS Family and School Association for providing the lunch.
After the success of this whole school project, the question now is, what’s next at ACS?

Moleben to the Blessed Virgin Mary

God so loved the world that He gave us His only begotten son Jesus. And what a blessing: He loved us so much, He also gave us the Blessed Mary.
The month of May is the month dedicated to the Mother of God and  each year the students at Assumption Catholic School in Perth Amboy, NJ make special efforts to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary by learning and spreading the knowledge, love and devotion to her. We pray to Mary, Our Heavenly Queen each day, we sing special songs in her Honor and we pray the rosary.  Today, the student body and faculty gathered in front of the Grotto to the Mother of God and  sang a very special prayers service, the Moleben to Mary. As the sun appeared on a beautiful blue sky over our gathering, we prayed and asked the Blessed Mary to spread Her veil of protection over all the people in the USA during this pandamic time.  We also asked the Blessed Virgin Mary  to bless Bishop James F. Checchio on his fifth episcopal anniversary as shepherd of Metuchen Diocese and to protect Bishop Andriy Rabiy who is recovering from Covid-19. The Pastor, Father Ivan Turyk spoke to the students about Our Blessed Mother’s love and care for her children and how Mary is never too busy to hear a sincere request for our aid and guidance. As we sing in one of our songs to Mary “Remember, most loving Virgin Mary, never was it heard that anyone who turned to you for help was left unaided. . . . I run to your protection for you are my mother.” .

New Promethean boards for ACS!

We are so excited that our new boards have been installed and are ready for use.  Our teachers and students are so thrilled to use the new boards and have already found some cool features.  Not only does the Promethean Board allow teachers to display their computer screens, it offers thousands of interactive lessons, videos and support for our students.  We have some intense professional development planned and can’t wait to use this new technology to increase student engagement, allow our scholars more hands on experiences and well… they are so cool looking (plus no wires, no bulbs to replace and no license updates WOW)!  #ACSSTRONG #perthamboy #catholicschooleducation

Happy Earth Day

In this weeks news: Happy Earth Day from ACS’ Pre-Kindergarten scientists!! Today we went to our brand new STEM lab and did an experiment for Earth Day- we used milk, food coloring, cotton swabs and dish detergent. We were able to create a replica of the earth.  We dipped our cotton swab into the dish detergent and gently touch the surface of the food coloring drops in the milk. The soap heads to the fats of the milk creating the cool bursting of color. The food coloring looks like a fire work because it gets bumped around. We had a lot of fun and look forward to going to our STEM lab again soon.
