Value in Art

This past week the first and second graders learned about value in art.  Not how much money a piece of art is worth, but how you can vary the darkness or lightness of your colors for a more interesting picture.  They also talked about how using shading and shadows can make their favorite cartoons look more realistic.  To practice value, they created a magical forest of trees and arranged the different parts of the trees in order from the lowest value (darkest) to the highest value (lightest).  The students had fun experimenting with color, cutting and gluing their trees together.

100 Books in (Less Than) 100 Days

Congratulations to our Second Graders, who completed their Reading Challenge to read 100 books in 100 days in 58 days!  All the books were read during “brain” breaks in our school day, and in order for the book to “count”, students had to fill out a ticket listing the title, author, their full name and date, written with proper spelling and punctuation.  Mrs. Kukuruza even joined in the challenge, filling out a ticket each time she read a book to the class!  The 2nd grader who read the most books was Gia V. !! Way to go!

New Anywhere Carts

ACS finally received their 12 new Anywhere Carts and everyone was super excited!  We now have a safer (and less bulky) place to store our chromebooks and chargers. We always plan the use of our funding with students and teacher’s needs in mind. We feel so incredibly blessed.

Project Based Learning 🔥 5th grade!!

The 5th grade students did a fantastic job completing and presenting  their  Math “Pick A Project”. Students were able to select one of the three project choices and were then placed in a group to work together to complete the project. One group selected the bouncy ball project and had to come up with a business plan, another had to design a prototype ferry and several decided to build forts. The projects all related to concepts in the current topic and activated prior knowledge. They worked together in groups sharing ideas through the planning stage, all the way to the presentations. They can’t wait to complete the next one!!

NED’s Mindset Mission

On Monday, January 24th, our students were treated to a live streaming program called, NED’s Mindset Mission. Our host, Chad Watkins, both entertained and inspired. Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best is NED’s  message. Along the way were some sleight of hand illusions and of course, yo-yo fun.
Thanks Chad and NED; we hope to see you again.

A blessed Feast of Theophany to you!

The feast day of Theophany  was commemorated at the Assumption Parish with the Divine Liturgy and  the blessing of the waters at the end of the service. In his homily Fr. Ivan said that water is an essential and powerful element in our life and we Catholic Christians believe that the holy water, combined with faith and prayer, can heal those who drink it and cleanse people from spiritual impurities. After the blessing of the water ceremony, Fr. Ivan walked around the school with a small group of 8 grades students and blessed each room with holy water and offered a blessing to students and staff. Some students even had a chance to use Father’s Sprinkler and bless their classmates with the holy water. He also asked students various questions about Feasts of Christmas and Theophany and was very pleased by their answers.

School’s 2021 Christmas Concert.

Our students worked diligently with their music teacher, Miss Lawrence, to create this beautiful program. Their happiness, their love, and their excitement was showcased and the true meaning of the Christmas season was portrayed.

The last time we were together was December 2019 and although that doesn’t seem like that long, we all know it has been a difficult couple of years.  We stand proud of the work that the teachers and staff have done and continue to do daily.  They are passionate about their profession and during this pandemic have shown that Catholic Schools have been able to get the job done.  We have kept our children on grade level, continue to offer them a safe space and opportunities to express their thoughts, and have shown them to trust in God’s plan.

The show was dedicated to all the parents, guardians and extended family members who support our students and our mission at Assumption Catholic School – to know, to love, to serve God.
