ACS Holiday Bazaar

Assumption Catholic School will be holding its 2008 Holiday Bazaar on Sunday, November 9 from 11:30 am – 5 pm.

"Preparations for the holiday bazaar are in full swing and it looks to be a fun day for all," says Glenys Bilolohowski, president of the ACS Family and School Association (FSA). “Our Bazaar Committee and parents are working hard to prepare a fun day for all. There will be games of chance, raffles, crafts and prizes. As usual, the kitchen will be open serving all kinds of delicious foods. Make a day of it and spend it with us. All are welcome. Bring your friends.”

ACS has been running an annual holiday bazaar since 1968, one of the longest running bazaar's in the area.

If anyone is interested in being a vendor at the bazaar, call the school at 732-826-8721.

See everyone on November 9 at the bazaar!

Six Flags Great Adventure

On May 22, 2008 anticipation and excitement electrified the bus as the Classes of 2008 and 2009 approached our destination, Six Flags, Great Adventure. As we passed by the colossal rides our stomachs began to churn and rumble with nervous feelings. We stepped off the bus and walked to the entrance. It seemed like an eternity to pass through the gate into the park.

We split into different groups, each led by a chaperone. Each group ran to their first rides: Nitro – The Great American Scream Machine and The Buccaneer. These rides were followed by other rides such as the Batman ride, the Dark Knight ride and Medusa. Rides that were easier to handle were also chosen to calm ourselves from the excitement of the big coasters.

At some point during the day all of the groups stopped for lunch. After gobbling down lunch it was on to more thrilling rides and a show or two. We were able to go to the dolphin show and a 3 – D movie. We then continued our day meeting the challenges of Rolling Thunder, Runaway Train, the Teacups, and some rides we rode twice!

As our fantastic day at Great Adventure came to an end, we paused to remember that this trip would not have been possible without the permission of Mr. S. We are thankful for his trust in us to act like adults in this type of situation. We are thankful to our teachers and chaperones for taking the responsibility for us. We are especially thankful to Mr. Carlos Dortrait, alumnus and brother to Mrs. Shumny. His gracious donation for the cost of the bus
made it possible for this trip!

A Weekend in the Life of ACS

When one thinks of school, some things that come to mind are pencils, math problems, spelling bees, and book reports. All of that is true for Assumption Catholic Elementary School in Perth Amboy, NJ with some extras. On Friday afternoon, May 16, our Pastor, Father Roman Dubitsky, dedicated and blessed our new pond/Monarch butterfly sanctuary. Present for the dedication were the city’s mayor-elect Mrs. Wilda Diaz, Mr. Richard Hills – a representative of the Middlesex County Division of Solid Waste Management, and Ms. Liska and Ms. Crews – representatives of the Royal Garden Club of Perth Amboy. The entire student body sang hymns to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The three-tier pond-ecosystem will be a reminder for the students to be “Stewards of God’s Earth” not only on Earth Day, but every day of the year. The project was made possible by the hard work of the fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Rizkallah and a generous grant from the Middlesex County Division of Solid Waste Management.

Later that same afternoon the school body walked over to church to sing a Moleben/Marian Veneration. The students presented flowers to the Virgin Mary, and several girls were inducted into the Sodality. The beautiful and uplifting service was prepared by Sr. Yosaphata, Sr. Maria, and Mrs. Lisa Rosato.

On Saturday, May 17, the ACS Track Team gathered at Bishop Ahr High School athletic field to compete in the Central Jersey Catholic Schools Individual Championships. The competition was rigid, but the previous five meets prepared our team well. Our 32 student-athletes battled heroically and brought home 7 medals. Team coach Mrs. Donna Tartza and the entire school is extremely proud of all our track and field athletes.

The following day, Sunday, May 18, our upper-grade Ukrainian Dance Group brought pride once again to our school. The dancers represented the school and Ukrainian-Americans at a Heritage Festival sponsored by the Township of Union, NJ in celebration of their bicentennial. Even though it rained throughout the day, when it came time for our dancers to perform, the clouds rolled back, the sun shone brightly, and our dancers were the hit of the show. If you missed it, check the TV listings and maybe Channel 34 will have a replay of their performance.

So, not only do we study and play hard during the week, but our weekends are filled with activities as well!

First Confession and First Solemn Communion

Funny five featured in “Forum” farce

Five ACS graduates have roles in the musical, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" with the St. Joseph High School Theatre Company. This classic comedy is a hilarious farce set in ancient Rome.

The actors are: three sisters – Rebecca, Jessica, and Marisa C.! plus Jacqueline S., and Alexander M., who plays the lead character, Pseudolus. Alas, this is the last time to see Rebecca and Alexander in a high school production!

Evening performances are: March 27, 28, 29 and April 3, 4, and 5 at 7:30 PM. Sunday matinee's are March 30 and April 6 at 3 PM. The St. Joseph Theatre is behind the main school building at 145 Plainfield Ave., Metuchen, NJ. Tickets are available at the door.

Please support our talented and hard-working ACS graduates!
