ACS Algebra I Class

ACS is proud to announce that eight 8th graders take a High School Algebra I course right here in our building!  These dedicated students arrive at 7:15 to take their one hour course.  The course is taught by Mrs. Billy who plans rigorous lessons and challenges this group to excel in Math. During the day while their peers are in regular math, they work on real life math projects and collaborative projects in the principal’s office.  I am impressed with the level of maturity and dedication – way to go Mrs. Billy and the Algebra I students!

More than 10 students from Assumption Catholic School spent their Saturday morning helping to clean up a Perth Amboy Waterfront as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day. This event highlights the importance of protecting our ecosystems and allows the students of ACS to make a positive impact close to home. Thank YOU! Thank you so much to ACS students and its Principal who came out to make a difference for our city.

Science in First Grade

First graders conducted their first science experiment using bubbles. After learning about what science is and becoming familiar with some science terms, the class formed a hypothesis on whether or not we can make square bubbles. They used straws and string to make a square shape to blow the bubble soap out of to see if the bubbles would stay square. After many tries, the class concluded that the bubbles would still come out as circle shapes.

Myrrh-streaming icon Kardiotissa (Tender Heart) Mother God visits ACS

This past Friday the miraculous myrrh-streaming icon of the Theotokos Kardiotissa ("Tender Heart") from  St.  George Orthodox Church in Taylor, PA was brought to the students of ACS. The Tender Heart icon has been streaming myrrh (fragrant oil) for the last four years.

After Moleben, a special prayer service to the Virgin Mary celebrated by Fr. Ivan Turyk,   the icon’s guardian Fr. Mark Leasure took the icon out of the case telling the children to hold their hands up, and then he would tilt the icon, holding it over their hands. Then the  golden drops of oil were  running off the icon into the children’s hands. All through the service and this special visit  the icon streamed gold-colored myrrh (fragrant oil) in abundance. Fr. Mark told the story of how the icon began to exude myrrh, and many stories of healings after anointing with the oil. At the end, students of ACS sang  the hymn to the Blessed Mary  and then everyone was anointed with the holy oil. All agreed, that the miracle of the constant flow of fragrant myrrh regenerating on this icon is truly a wonder of our times  and a powerful reminder of  the Most Holy Mother of God presence   is  in our midst.

Patriot Day 2017

September 11, 2001 is a day that will forever be remembered as one of the saddest days for the United States of America. It is the day that our country suffered from an attack that shook us to the core. As the years have moved on, we as a country take the time each year to pause and reflect on the changes that have been forced upon our daily lives. In that reflection our faith helps us to have the hope for the change that can make the world a better place.

Today our ACS community gathered as they do every morning for prayers. The eighth grade Class of 2018 gave a short presentation on the events of September 11, 2001, followed by a prayer for Patriot Day, which this day of remembrance is now called. Hopefully, as time continues to pass, the next generations will also remember what happened so many years ago. Hopefully, they will choose to overcome hate through actions of peace and kindness. God bless America!

Welcome Back To ACS 54th Year

The vision of the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops over a half century ago led to the establishment of Assumption Catholic School in Perth Amboy NJ that currently is the largest elementary Ukrainian Catholic School in America. Over the years, thousands of students have called the school their second home and with their parents, created many positive memories. Among the many gratifying moments is when alumni return to register their own children to give them the Assumption Catholic experience.

On September 6, 2017 for the 54th time the ACS welcomed back returning and many new students. Students were welcomed by their teachers and a new principal Mrs. Lissette Shumny, who started her first year as ACS principal. An energy of excitement and anticipation buzzed on the school grounds as the students, fresh-faced in their crisp uniforms reunited with friends and shook off any lingering first-day jitters. ACS IS SO  proud and excited to launch the 2017-2018 school year with our incredibly talented and dedicated teaching staff and  ongoing support and partnership of Assumption parish. ACS is a small parochial school administered by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen, the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia and the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. AdvancEd accredited, the school provides a Christ-centered, Catholic environment to a diverse population of pre-kindergarten (age 4) through 8thgrade students. Before Care and After Care are available.
Registration is ongoing throughout the school year.

Mass for Catholic School Teachers

Teachers and principals of the Diocese of Metuchen marked the opening of a new academic year with a Mass for Catholic School Teachers celebrated by Bishop James F. Checchio on August 29, 2017. Our parish school was well represented at this special ceremony.

First Faculty Meeting School Year 2017-18.

Although school won’t start until next week, the sounds of teachers  filled the air at ACS as they gathered for the First Faculty Meeting on August, 31st. The teachers enjoyed ‘family’ atmosphere set by a new Principal Mrs. Lissette Shumny. She greeted the teachers, thanked them for their work and asked them to continue growing in their professional performance.  She also reminded everyone that ACS has always been a school filled with professionals who care deeply about the kids and families they serve. Fr. Ivan Turyk, Pastor and Chief Administrator greeted all teachers and thanked them for making a commitment to Catholic Education. He also reminded them that they set an example by their actions, not only in the classroom, but in their lives.
