Class Rings Blessed at ACS

On Friday, November 16, Assumption Catholic School welcomed the Class of 2019 and their parents to the Annual Blessing of Class Rings Ceremony. The class rings were blessed after the Liturgy by Fr. Ivan Turyk and presented to the Class of 2019 by the school’s principal, Mrs. Lissette Shumny. After posing for pictures, class members and their families enjoyed a small breakfast celebration in the church hall. Students continued with their fun morning back at school where ACS students and teachers turn the rings to wish the seniors good luck. Fr. Ivan challenged the seniors to become servant leaders and be God’s partners in serving others at the school and in the world.Kudos and blessings to the Class of 2019!

Backpack Drive for Ukrainian Children.

Students from Assumption Catholic School (ACS) in Perth Amboy, New Jersey give back and have impacted the lives of children in Ukraine. For the third year in a row, the school and a parish in cooperation with the Carteret Youth Chapter of the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM), have collected items of warm clothing, school supplies, sweets and toys packaged in backpacks to be distributed to kids in need in Ukraine — including the eastern region, which has seen heavy fighting since the war with Russia broke out in April 2014. We are thankful to all who helped.

Halloween Fun Walk

You could feel the excitement in the air! After a quick pep talk and start signal, the First ACS Halloween Fun Walk was off to a great start. Middle School Classes were teamed up with younger classes and off they went! They walked around the block with each class walking as many laps as possible. By the time the older students had finished walking, many had walked over 5 miles!
The morning continued as tired student began to return to the building for a mouth – watering, pancake breakfast prepared by members of our FSA. Next, our principal, Mrs. Shumny, led the students in dancing to many familiar and Halloween themed songs.
All of the student left for home at the end of the day with full tummies, tired feet, and many happy memories.

Early Visit From Perth Amboy Fire Department!

This morning representatives of the Perth Amboy Fire Department came to visit the Class of 2019, not to discuss fire safety, but to discuss American flag etiquette. As representatives for PAFD at special ceremonies that include the raising, lowering, or presentation of the flag, the firefighters explained to the students the symbolism of each part of the flag and the meaning of the steps taken to properly fold the flag of the United States. Students then had the chance to practice properly fold the flag. ACS Class of 2019 thanks Firefighters Perez, Vasquez, and Kehoe for taking time from their busy schedule to share their knowledge and skills with us.

S.T.R.E.A.M. Comes to ACS

When someone says the word stream to you, it probably makes you think about water moving along a given path. In this case, it means something very different. STREAM stands for science, technology, religion, engineering, art, and math. Students in grades 6 – 8 here at ACS have been given the opportunity to explore the world around them using the STREAM concept. Mrs. Roselle, Mrs Pickering, and parent, Mrs Stisi, recently met with the STREAM club for the very first time. Using pipettes, watercolor paper, crayons, watercolors, and water, they observed the behavior of water. They used crayons to control where the water moved. Finally, they used watercolors to create artwork that was unique to each student.
The club will meet on Monday afternoons throughout the year to gain ideas, and apply concepts that will teach students to become critical thinkers and investigate their surrounding environment and the world around them. Stay tuned for their further adventures!

ACS’s Coding Club

The club met for the first time after school on October 10th. Students from grades 3, 4 and 5 joined together to learn what it means to code and program. They learned about its importance in the world today and shared their ideas of what it is used for. Students had a lot of fun learning how to use Scratch, a special programming website. Everyone is really excited for the upcoming weeks when they will create and share their own interactive game! We thank our new teacher, Mrs. Rosell, for bringing this new club to our students!

85th Commemoration of the Holodomor

On Friday, October 5, the Assumption Catholic School community in Perth Amboy, NJ  gathered to honor the memory of the innocent victims of the Holodomor, the famine-genocide of 1932-1933 in Soviet Ukraine that killed unknown millions of men, women, and children.  Assumption Catholic School joined the 85-day international action of the Ukrainian World Congress and its partners – Light a Candle of Remembrance – dedicated to the 85th anniversary of this catastrophic event in Ukraine.

The eighth-grade class solemnly processed into the church, carrying with them a simple loaf of bread. Ukraine was once called the breadbasket of Europe. This bread was symbolically placed on the tetrapod before the start of Liturgy as an offering in memory of the victims and as a symbol of hope. Fr. Ivan offered special petitions during the Liturgy for the departed victims of the Holodomor, and against hunger and intolerance.

Immediately following Liturgy, a requiem service was held to commemorate the child victims, who suffered the most because they were the most vulnerable. The eighth-grade class read aloud the names of 85 children who died during the Holodomor. It is likely that 1.5 to 4 million children died during the height of the famine-genocide.

At the conclusion of the requiem service, students, teachers, and faithful placed individual stalks of wheat in front of the icon of the Blessed Virgin, imploring her for her continued protection over Ukraine, the United States of America, and Assumption Catholic School.

May the memories of those who died during the Holodomor be eternal and may they continue to rest peacefully in the hands of our merciful God! Vichnaya Pamyat!
