Day 3 of Catholic Schools Week 2019

Today Pre-K, kinder and 1st grade had a wonderful time sharing and presenting a special item from home. They each spoke about why the item is special, how they got it, and how long they’ve had it. They did a terrific job! Kindergarten and first grade also had their second day of hatching observations, and were excited that the egg finally cracked! THERE’S MORE! The day also included the 8th graders teaching excellent social studies and science lessons, which has become an annual tradition that everyone looks forward to. Yet, the teaching award of the day goes to Father Ivan for his demonstration at church today! Father showed and explained the significance and symbolism of each piece of a priest’s vestments. From the color, to the designs, and each article of clothings special meaning. Father told students how he prepares the communion bread called “prosphora”. He had a sample bread, and demonstrated how he does the special cuts of bread and explained the symbolism of each piece. Students were quite interested in the process and honored to see the communion plate and cup so close. It was a morning they will long remember.

Day 2 of Catholic Schools Week 2019 at ACS

Today Pre-K celebrated with a Tooty Ta song and dance party – they got the whole school to dance with them. Pre-K also went on a Bear Hunt using their binoculars to help search for the bear! Kindergarten was super excited to play Sight Word Bingo and show their knowledge. Grades 3-5 had an “Escape Room” cross curricular activity where the 5th graders were able to show their leadership qualities and lead their team to a victory! Last but not least, our 7th and 8th grade made pierogies with Sister Yosaphata and their teachers. The whole school practiced for a surprise performance and continued to work on their Heritage Projects and Catholic Schools week posters. Truly a fun and exciting day! What will tomorrow bring?

How to Raise a Raisin

The 3rd grade class read How to Raise a Raisin, and learned how grapes are grown, picked and dried to become raisins. They also found out about all the different food that use raisins and then experimented with several recipes as well. The favorite was a tie between, “Rats on a Raft” and “ Ants on a Log”! A great read and a healthy snack – way to go third grade!

ACS congratulates Nathaniel

ACS congratulates Nathaniel, an 8th grader, for being recognized by the League of Ukrainian Catholics of America. Nate was selected by his teachers and principal as an exemplary student who works hard and lives his faith. He is a young man who always goes above and beyond to help others and a true team player. Nathaniel received an award and a monetary gift because he is a student who truly represents Assumption Catholic School’s mission; to know, love and serve God.

ACS Middle School Students Send Their Love!

In late November members of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Parish of Carteret suffered the unthinkable loss of their beautiful church. Many of our older ACS students are from Carteret, so word traveled quickly through the classes. Students are also familiar with Father Vladyka, the pastor of St Mary’s, since he has given his time to our students for confessions.

The Class of 2019 discussed what might be done to show support for St.Mary’s parishioners. It was decided that they and their fellow middle school friends would take up a collection. Since it was right before St.Nicholas Day, they decided to collect nickels for St. Nicholas. They donated their own money as they arrived in science class each day, giving a nickel here, a dime there. Soon their nickels added up! The Classes of 2019,2020, and 2021 presented Father Ivan a heavy box of change. Over three weeks they had collected over $100. Father Ivan in turn presented the money to Father Vladyka on Christmas day. Students hope that Father Vladyka will be able to use their donations for something that will lift the spirits of his parish family.
