Our little knitters club is finally starting to see the fruits of their labor! For the past few weeks, a group of dedicated 2nd and 3rd graders have been working hard during their recess time on Mondays and Thursdays with Miss Lawrence. They’ve learned the basic knit stitch while working on a small project. Each student completed one small knitted patch which will get sewn together to make a cute pillow the students plan to give away as a gift. Some students have even moved onto a new project – making a headband – which will include the new skill of working with multiple strands of yarn to create different color blocks and stripes. The yarn for our pillow project was provided by each of the students. Most of the yarn for our headband project was donated to our group by a friend of Miss Lawrence. The students have been learning a crafty life skill and have also shared a lot of laughs and fun times along the way.

The Classes of 2018 and 2019 gathered together on a recent afternoon to focus on their Lenten journey. With Good Friday quickly coming upon them, they put their thoughts on the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus on that day. As they thought about what He did for all of us, they used water colors to make their own artistic remembrance of that day. Students enjoyed the quiet time and were quite happy with their work.

The third grade students have been very busy learning about our planet, Earth. Last week we learned about how the weather, wind and water, has sculpted the Earth’s surface.
We also learned about the different types of clouds. We learned their position in the sky and how to tell the weather from the types of clouds we see in the sky. We then created our own clouds out of cotton balls and paint.
We enjoyed reading the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs as we imagined if our weather was made of food instead or wind and water.
This week the students are enjoying a new comfy chair , thanks to a special donation, and using the computers to listen to and read their Studies Weekly as we learn about the moon, sun and the star
They really enjoy sitting in different spots and I find that they are more engaged in their learning when not sitting at a tradition desk.
In Math we are working hard learning about measurement. We have learned about using inches, feet, yards and miles to measure things.
We are also learning about measuring capacity of liquids. In order to help the students understand gallon, quarts, pints and cups we have created a conversion chart and called him our Gallon Bot.
His body is a gallon, his arms and legs are made up of quarts, pints and cups.
The kids really enjoyed creating their gallon bots and now understand the equivalent units.
Teacher Spirituality Day
ACS’s 2018 Teacher Spirituality Day was a beautiful day of sharing, prayer, and reflection. Father John Zeyak prepared a meaningful program with personal reflection on the significance of being truly present as educators and Christians. Father John and the teachers sang a Moleben prayer service and had time to spend together. All present enjoyed the day and truly felt it was a time to reflect and grow closer to God.

The 8th grade students get taste of Ukrainian culture, as they learned to make pyrohy (the Ukrainian term for pierogies) a task that’s as much an art as a science. The fun event was organized and supervised by Sr. Yosaphata.
Genetics Studies Completed
Recently the Class of 2019 and the Class of 2021 completed their studies of genetics in science. As a completion to this topic the students teamed together to do some further research on genetic disorders. They put together a poster that highlighted the characteristics of different disorders that are inherited through the genes of one or both parents.
Mrs. Billy, the homeroom teacher for the Class of 2021, brought her daughter Abbey, a Down syndrome child, to school for both classes to meet. She explained about Abby’s life from when they found out she would be a special needs child until the present. While Mrs. Billy was telling Abby’s story, students eagerly took turns holding the very happy and excited Abby. Hopefully, all of the students were able to see the preciousness of every life that God gives to us.

Grade 7
Mr Wythe’s 7th grade social studies class recently put on a model US Congress. The class elected a class president according to the Electoral College, who appointed a cabinet. The class, led by the Speaker of the House, debated 3 bills to pass to the President to be signed into law. Seventh Grade passed a bill banning tobacco sales on college campuses, appointed a sub-committee to fact-check a proposed Voter ID act, and voted down a bill to begin drilling for oil.

Mr Wythe’s 5th grade social studies class has been hard at work studying the events that led up to the Civil War. To start the unit, 5th Grade did a research project on the Dred Scott hearing and then presented their findings in a new report format. Each group had 2 anchors, and a field reporter who interviewed the US Supreme Court. Everyone enjoyed their time behind the news desk!

In honor of Dr. Suess Day, the kindergartens along with their 8th grade reading buddy made ‘Cool Paper Cat Puppets’. They enjoyed interacting and learning from each other as well as working towards a common goal together. Everyone had so much fun!!
