You are cordially invited to attend the service of Akathist to the Divine Passion of Christ at Assumption Catholic Church, Perth Amboy NJ, on February 26, 2012 at 3:00 P.M. All parishes are invited and the service will be celebrated by all the priests from New Jersey Deanery. The faithful will have an opportunity to venerate the Shroud of Turin, participate in the service of the Passion of Christ, approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation and receive the Anointing of the Sick. We hope as many of you as possible will try to attend.

Earlier in the year the Fourth Grade class visited the American Museum of Natural History.  Now it was time for the students to put to use what they had learned about Native Americans.  For this project, each student chose what they wanted to create.  Some chose to build a longhouse, some created a diorama.  Several students wanted to try to make a Native American headdress and yet others tried to make jewelry.   Each item had to be made in class and had to be completed by the student alone.  One student had plans  copied from the internet but for the most part they learned as they went along.  I am very proud of what they have accomplished on their own.

Since ACS is out of this world in Faith, Academica and Service, we just had to learn about the planets.  This is also part of our Fourth Grade curriculum.  The Fourth Grade class has learned the planet song and we would like to present it to the world.

Keeping in the theme of Catholic School’s week, the Fourth Grade drew then colored the planets in order on the playground.  This was not as simple as it seemed.

 Assumption Catholic School families attended Divine Liturgy on Sunday, January 29, 2012 with parishioners to officially open Catholic Schools Week.  During the homily Father Ivan spoke of the theme for the week, Faith, Academics, and Service. He also introduced three ACS students that had written essays about how ACS is out of this world in faith, academics, and service. Jillian of Grade 4, Emily of Grade 5 and Steven of Grade 8 read their essay to the parish and ACS families in attendance.  At the end of Liturgy Student Council members passed out small candies that gave parishioners “a hug and a kiss” for their heartfelt support.”

Monday began many activities that students and teachers alike enjoyed. There were brunches and breakfasts, movies and scavenger hunts. Younger children participated in a reading marathon sponsored by the Class of 2012. Pre K children were helping hands around the world while Student Council spent each lunch day counting pennies for our “Pennies for Technology” fundraiser.

On Wednesday every class from Pre K to fifth grade had the chance to play games at the carnival sponsored by the Classes of 2012, 2013, and 2014. After dismissal Father Ivan took the teachers out to lunch at Olive Garden.

Friday closed out the week with lunch provided by our FSA, followed by a pep rally and Class of 2012 vs the Faculty volleyball game.  Mrs. Shumny had everyone on their feet cheering for each other. The volleyball game was almost as exciting as the Super Bowl The score went back and forth until finally the faculty was able to seal the game with a 15 – 13 win over the students.

As another Catholic Schools Week came to an end, students could take with them the memories they made with their teachers, their classmates, and the rest of the school. Be sure to view the pictures that can be found on our ACS web site.

Substituting Catholic school uniforms for pajamas isn't an every day occurrence at the ACS, but during the Catholic Schools Week, students relished the exchange. Pajama Day is always a popular classroom fun day!

As part of Catholic Schools Week,  the 8th grade students have challenged their teachers to a volleyball game with the student body cheering on their favorite players. Before the game against the teachers, the 8th grade students had a bit of a pep rally. The game was challenging and fun for all who were involved. Though the teachers won, many of them were pretty sore the next day.

The Feast of Epiphany is a liturgical event that is celebrated every year on January 6th. Over the course of 2000 years, it has evolved to commemorate one of the most significant events in Christendom – the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the river Jordan. During Epiphany, people traditionally attend a prayer service where the priest blesses regular water into holy water – a “Blessing of the Water” ceremony. On Friday, January 6th, 2012, the staff and students of ACS celebrated Epiphany with a prayer service after their weekly Liturgy.  The service was conducted by the school administrator and pastor of the Assumption Church, Fr. Ivan Turyk. After the blessing of the water ceremony, Fr. Ivan  walked around the school with a small group of students and blessed each room with a sprinkle of the newly blessed holy water.
