Time Flies

There is an idiom which states: time flies. Does it really? It’s hard to believe, but ACS has already finished the first marking period of the 2013 – 2014 school year. For the sixth graders this was their first time taking exams in all subjects.  It was also their first experience with parent/guardian conferencing in which they attended the conference to find out how they themselves were doing. The seventh and eighth graders knew exactly what to expect.

The middle school level at ACS has three categories to acknowledge personal achievement. They are Highest Honors with a 95 average, High Honors with a 90 average, and Honors achieving an 85 average.

Highest Honors:
Grade 8- Sasha Aquino, Cassandra Rizkallah, Amarilis Rodriguez, Alexandra Slavik
Grade 7- Carlos Cruz, Steven Marcucchi, Arjun Patel, Katherine Perez, Justin Scocco, Elena Zambrowski
Grade 6 – Jillian Pogoda, Andrea Vira

High Honors:

ACS Family Thanksgiving

On Wednesday, November 27, while many people were thinking about what would be on their Thanksgiving table, our ACS family had an early taste of turkey and all of the delicious sides to go with it. Before the meal actually was served there were many helping hands from our middle school pie bakers and cornbread makers to our always-supportive parents.

The day before the feast saw lots of kitchen action. Seventh and eighth graders baked apple and pumpkin pies. They also prepared 12 chocolate cream pies. The sixth grade contributed to the feast with their contribution of delicious cornbread. The eighth graders used their prior potato peeling experience to help them peel almost 300 potatoes!

Entertainment was provided by ACS Senior Drama Club. In the form of a prayer they told the story of the first Thanksgiving. Father Ivan blessed the food and before you knew it our parish guests, faculty, and students were happily enjoying their wonderful mea that had been prepared with lots of love by many of our parents led by Jenine. Thank you to all that helped to make another delicious Thanksgiving feast!

8th grade leaders

The Class of 2014 has been very busy this month! In addition to receiving their class rings, they were also granted permission to wear gray embroidered shirts, instead of the traditional while polo.  The eighth graders wanted to stand out as the leaders of the school and their teachers and principal agreed they have earned this privilege. Mr. Troche, an alumni parent, embroidered the shirts and expedited the student's request.  The class was eager to wear their new shirts and show their class unity, leadership and school spirit!

Highest Honors

This week the two eighth graders with the highest averages (first marking period) were awarded a beautiful Assumption Catholic School winter jacket. Mr. Troche embroidered and donated the jackets and personally presented the top students their gift in recognition of their hard work and effort.  Congratulations to Amarilis R. and Cassandra R. of the Class of 2014! Keep up the outstanding work and may God continue to bless and guide you in your studies.

Tradition Continues

On a recent Friday after Divine Liturgy, the Class of 2014 continued a tradition that has become near and dear to every graduating class. They received their graduation ring from pastor, Father Ivan. The excitement was obvious as they arrived for school and walked together as a class over to church. Their weekly jobs as teacher helpers in Pre K, kindergarten, and first grade were temporarily passed to the Class of 2015.

Father Ivan blessed the rings then congratulated each student as Mr. S. called them forward to receive their ring. Following a session of proud families taking pictures, everyone went down to the church basement for a small celebration to mark the importance of the day. Congratulations on your latest achievement Class of 2014!

Middle School Stars

For the past several weeks the teachers in ACS middle school section have selected a Star Student of the Week. The criteria for selection can be: all assignments are completed, excellent effort, extra helpful, positive attitude, etc. Our stars have received certificates of acknowledgement and were treated to lunch (Wendy’s, subs, pizza) by their teachers.
Winners of the award during the first marking period are as follows:
Grade 6:  Andrea V, Megan O, Jasmine P, and Matthew S.
Grade 7: Peter Z, Alyssa M, Isaiah A, and Carlos C.
Grade 8: Alexandra S, Alton T Kyle D, and Sasha A.

Glogster

The seventh grade class at ACS has just completed their first “Glogster” presentation on an assigned European Explorer.  After an exciting Social Studies lesson on various explorers’ contributions to trade and exploration, as well as technology used to make long sea voyages possible, the class of 2015 used current technology to share the information they researched.

Each student was assigned an explorer in which they were required to research.  It was essential they follow the teacher outline for all the information needed in their presentation.  The rest was all creativity!  The interactive “Glogster” poster board is a program that allows students the ability to add pictures, video clips, and let their ingenuity shine.  This was a rigorous project which used the traditional poster board way of displaying information and added a technological twist that the students enjoyed and kept them engaged.  A short oral presentation followed which gave students the opportunity to share their new knowledge.  Mrs. Shumny’s class did thorough research and put together detailed presentations and took great pride in their work.  They are eager to start their next project endeavor!

A.C.S. HONORS OUR VETS

November 11, a very special day in the life of our country. It is the day set aside to honor those that served and continue to serve our country in the military. Here at ACS we have not only honored these men and women with our Wall of Honor, we are also honoring those currently serving our country in other lands.

Through the efforts of ACS Student Council, and their secretary Mia R. of the Class of 2014, nonperishable food items and other useful items for our vets were donated by our ACS families. Mia delivered these items to Perth Amboy City Hall where they will be individually packed and sent out to or troops. Than you to all of the families that supported the efforts of ACS Student Council.

Veteran’s Day

In honor of Veterans' Day, Mrs. Lawrence's fifth grade students made cards of appreciation and thanks.  The children wrote simple messages expressing their gratitude to those men and women who gave their time to our country.  All the cards will be sent to the Veterans' Home in Edison, NJ.
