Our Class’ Favorite Color

What’s your favorite color? The 3rd grade students answered this question using data collection and analysis techniques. Each student was asked to color a crayon cut-out using their favorite color. Next, students hung their crayons in the hallway and worked together to create tally charts. Finally, students worked together to create pictographs depicting Our Class’ Favorite Colors. The answer? Stop by the 3rd grade hallway for a look at the colorful display and to find out which color is our very favorite!

New Year’s Resolutions

Coming back from Christmas Break was an exciting time in Third Grade. We discussed how we spent our Christmas Break and how we are all looking forward to 2015. We learned about the word “resolutions” and how it means making a decision to do something or to behave in a certain manner. The students wrote their own New Year’s Resolutions, posted them on a student cut-out, and added their own special festive and decorative touches. Student work is on display in the 3rd grade hallway. Come check out our creativity!

Reading Rewards

In January, The Terrific-Third students completed their first Reading Rewards Goal. Students read and logged over 12,000 minutes of reading! Students completing 75 minutes per week (or more) initialed and colored a box on our chart. We were all excited each week as the chart grew more and more colorful. Once we hit our goal, students were invited to a special pizza lunch to celebrate! Congratulations and let’s keep reading!

Martin Luther King

The First Grade has been learning about American heroes during Social Studies. In observance of Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we have learned about our modern day American hero and the dream he had for all mankind.

We learned that in order to live as children of God, as Dr.King did, we are called to be peace makers. "You do not need fists to win a battle, only powerful words," Dr.King said. He also said, "Love is the key to the problems of the world." In First Grade, we held hands to acknowledge this.

After listening to his speech about his dream of peace, we too shared our own dreams including dreams of having and making peace in the world.

Bingo workers appreciation dinner.

This month we had our Bingo workers appreciation dinner. It was another fine dining experience, well worth the price of helping out with Bingo. The weekly Bingo fundraiser is a HUGE benefit to Assumption Catholic School. This collaborative effort between the church and the school funds a big portion of our school budget. Parents, please be mindful of your commitment to work at bingo. When the floor is fully staffed, Bingo is most successful and profitable. Bingo is held twice a week on Wednesday and Friday. Doors open at 6 P.M. Food and refreshments are available for purchasing. Bingo games start at 7:30 P.M.

The Great Sanctification of Water on the Feast of the Theophany

The Feast of the Holy Theophany (Epiphany) of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated each year on January 6. The Feast commemorates the Baptism of Christ and the divine revelation of the Holy Trinity. At the Baptism of Christ, all three Persons of the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—were made manifest. Thus, the name of the Feast is Epiphany, meaning manifestation, or Theophany, meaning manifestation of God. During Theophany, people traditionally attend a prayer service where the priest blesses regular water into holy water at the “Blessing of the Water” ceremony. This year, after the blessing of the water ceremony in the church, Fr. Ivan walked around the school with a small group of students and blessed each room with holy water and offered a blessing to students and staff. He also asked students various questions about Feasts of Christmas and Theophany and was very pleased by their answers.

Prayer of Blessing the Water
“…Therefore, O King, Lover of mankind, be present now too through the visitation of your Holy Spirit, and sanctify this water. And give to it the grace of redemption and the blessing of Jordan. Make it a source of incorruption, a gift of sanctification, a deliverance from sins, an averting of diseases, unapproachable by hostile powers, filled with angelic strength. That all who draw from it and partake of it may have it for cleansing of souls and bodies, for healing of passions, for sanctification of homes, for every suitable purpose. … And now, Master, do You yourself sanctify this water by your Holy Spirit”
